BREAKING NEWS – Toyota Sales on Hold

January 26, 2010

In a move that is not surprising to this commentator, Toyota has halted sales of many popular models to the on going gas pedal issues.  The models impacted appear to be the following:

2009-2010 RAV4,

2009-2010 Corolla,

2009-2010 Matrix,

2005-2010 Avalon,

Certain 2007-2010 Camry,

2010 Highlander,

2007-2010 Tundra,

2008-2010 Sequoia

(I state appear as it is not clear yet if this is the full list – Watch for comparable Lexus models to follow suit)

For those of you that do not know, Toyota has been struggling with unintended acceleration issues on many of its models since the tragic death of a California Highway Patrolman and his family in August of 2009.  This commentator has long suspected that the root of this issue might be located in the ECU (engine control unit, the computer that runs your car) but the fixes by Toyota have been focused on floor mats and mechanical issues with the gas pedal.

This sales suspension indicates that the problem is far larger and deeper than Toyota initially let on, halting sales of some of your best selling models is a huge move for an increasingly financially strapped Toyota.  Look for GM and Ford to pounce on this in their spring marketing campaigns.

The below press release is initial, I would not be shocked if this expands in the coming weeks.,1138022.shtml

Update: Autoblog is reporting that no Lexus or Scion vehicles will be included in this recall as they are built on different production lines.  That said the CHP accident involved a Lexus, so I am interested to see where this goes.
